Zantedeschia

Zantedeschia: everything you want to know

This beautifully elegant shaped flower comes originally from South Africa. Rarely is a flower known by so many different names. Besides Zantedeschia, we also know the flower by Calla, Calla Lily, Arum Aethiopicum, and Arum Lily. The latter name refers to the origin of the flower and the shape (calyx) of the flower. The name Zantedeschia refers to the Italian botanist G. Zantedeschi (1773 - 1846). Calla refers to the Greek word for beautiful, and Aethiopicum also has a Greek origin and means ‘sunbathing’. Did you know that that beautiful striking calyx is actually a colored bract? The real tiny flowers are on the spadix!

A flower with lots of symbolism

In addition to the many names, the flower also has various symbols. Since ancient times these flowers have been known as mascots. Because of the calyx shape of the flower, the ancient Greeks and Romans associated the flower with fun and partying. Besides this, the flower stands for beauty, purity, and innocence. The most sold color is white. This color is widely used in both funerals as wedding flower work.

Which types of Zantedeschia are available?

Zantedeschia’s shape is like no other and is available in a massive range of colors and stem lengths. The available colors of Zantedeschia change with the seasons. In spring, the flowers are lighter in color (such as white, pink, and light purple). In fall, darker shades (like yellow, orange, dark purple, and red) are more popular. There is a wide range of colors in the summer, partly because field-grown Zantedeschia is available in large numbers.
