Types of Lilies: what's the difference?

Lilies are beautiful flowers, but it's easy to get confused by all the different types like LA, Oriental, Asiatic, and Longiflorum. This guide helps you understand the key differences so you can choose the right Lilies for your needs.

Check out the overview below to discover all the features of the various types of Lilies! Be sure to keep reading our blog for even more detailed information of each Lily variety.

Lily

Lily Oriental

The large and fragrant flowers are the main characteristics of this type of Lily, , which also gives them a luxurious appearance. Oriental Lilies are larger than Asiatic Lilies. In the webshop you can find them under the name Lily Oriental They usually have 3-6 flowers per stem, with colors ranging from white and pink to red. The flowers are cup-shaped with curved tips, often with speckles or bicolor patterns.

Lily

Lily Oriental Double

Double Lilies, with their double number of petals, originate mostly from 'mutants' of Oriental Lilies. They have a full appearance resembling a Lotus flower and are fairly new to the market. Descended from Orientals, they have varying scents and are pollen-free due to their double petals. Colors are mainly white and pink. In the webshop you can find them also as Roselily.

Lily

Lily Asiatic

Asiatic Lilies are smaller than Oriental Lilies and come in a wide range of bright colors like yellow, orange, pink, and burgundy. They have 3-12 flowers per stem, depending on the variety. These Lilies are generally fragrance-free, making them a great choice for those sensitive to strong scents. Another important characteristic of the Asiatic Lily is the position of the flowers. They stand upright and are smaller compared to, for example, the Oriental Lily. When the flower is open, it is usually flat - this also makes it less prone to damage during transport or flower processing.

Lily LA (Longiflorum Asiaticum)

LA lilies are a cross between  Longiflorum Lilies and Asiatic. They have tall stems, large blooms, and a light scent. They last longer in a vase than Asiatic Lilies and come in a variety of colors, including red, orange, yellow, violet, and pink. There have usually 3-5 flowers per stem.

Lily

Lily Longiflorum

Longiflorum Lilies, also known as Easter Lilies, have 3-6 trumpet-shaped flowers per stem. They are usually white and are often used in religious and traditional settings. These Lilies have a softer scent compared to Oriental Lilies. The Longiflorum is more sensitive to transport due to this, because the way the flowers are positioned makes them prone to breaking or getting damaged easily.

Lily Martagon

Martagon Lilies, also known as Turk's cap Lilies, are a unique species of Lily that stands out for their distinctive shape and adaptability. These Lilies have a characteristic downward-facing, recurved petal structure, reminiscent of a turban or cap. They come in a variety of colors, ranging from soft pinks and whites to deep purples and reds, often with speckled patterns.

Fragrant vs Non-fragrant Lilies?

Want to know which Lilies have a scent? Asiatic Lilies are typically scent-free, while Oriental Lilies are known for their strong fragrance.Did you know that we have a variety of LA Lilies in our shop that don't have fragrance? These include Eyeliner, Nashville, Valencia, Sunderland, Spotify White, Spotify Pink, Ducati, and Brindisi.

Fragrant Lilies usually have wider leaves and fewer of them. They also tend to come in lighter colors like pink and white. On the other hand, non-fragrant Lilies often have more leaves and come in bright colors like orange and red.

Pollen-free Lily varieties - perfect for the wedding season

Pollen-free Lilies like Roselily are perfect for weddings. They don't leave pollen stains on wedding attire and are less likely to trigger allergies. These Lilies have beautiful, multi-layered petals that resemble roses, making them great for bridal bouquets and centerpieces. Because they don't have pollen, they're also perfect for indoor and outdoor events.
