Lathyrus: everything you want to know
Ohhh, that amazing Lathyrus! Also known by the name Sweet Pea because of its family ties to the bean (legume family). This delicate fragrant flower is a real gem that can be an asset for each designer to develop spectacular arrangements for weddings and all types of exquisite events. The story goes that in the 17th century, there was only one place in the world where Lathyrus was grown, on the Italian island of Sicily. A Sicilian monk named Fransicso Capani started cultivating the wild Lathyrus in his garden, and from then on, more and more colors were cultivated.
Symbolism
Lathyrus is steeped in symbolism and sentiment. This romantic flower is traditionally blooming on June 21st, better known as the longest day of the year (summer solstice). The flower symbolizes softness and kindness. The Lathyrus is a favorite flower of several members of the Dutch Royal Family. Queen Juliana’s gardener in the 20th century even grew Lathyrus flowers, especially for her. Also, our current queen Maxima is regularly spotted with Lathyrus.

Which types of Lathyrus are available?
Lathyrus comes in a wide range of colors and bicolored varieties, especially the palette in pastel colors is phenomenal. Thanks to the amazing colors, and combined with that heavenly scent, it is a very popular wedding flower. For several years now, dyed Lathyrus has been available.
