A behind-the-scenes look at Van der Ende Flowers – meet the family behind the stunning Amaryllises!
Upon arriving at Van der Ende Flowers, we were warmly greeted by Martijn’s mother, the owner of the nursery. We entered through a small, cozy shop filled with various plants and beautiful Amaryllises. Since Martijn was at another location at the time, his mother kindly offered us coffee, and we took a seat in the cafeteria overlooking the nursery. On the tables were vases showcasing different varieties of Amaryllis in bloom, creating a stunning palette of colors.
Martijn soon arrived and took us on a tour through the greenhouse. He proudly explained that Van der Ende Flowers is a true family business, where not only his mother but also his brother and son are actively involved. His son is even pursuing higher agricultural studies. The company spans 10 hectares of Amaryllis cultivation across three locations. Due to its size, some people might assume it's not a family business, but Martijn emphasizes that it’s precisely these family ties that make their approach unique.

Growing Amaryllis: a process of patience and expertise
The cultivation process of Amaryllis begins with a bulb that needs two years to produce a flower. After the December harvest, the bulb requires time to develop a new flower bud, which takes until mid-June. This cycle is repeated for three years, after which the bulb is harvested. The bulb then undergoes a ten-week cold period in the ground. After this rest period, the leaves are removed.

Van der Ende Flowers primarily works with Dutch bulbs due to their quality. While they do some breeding, Martijn considers this more of a hobby. He proudly talked about their unique Amaryllis variety, the "Bentley," which won the public award at Keukenhof.
Quality and diversity for the wholesale market
Van der Ende Flowers offers more than 20 different Amaryllis varieties, including large-flowered, small-flowered, and unique Cybister types with their distinctive spider-like shapes. With this wide range, the company can provide a complete assortment for wholesalers. Martijn explains that delivering so many varieties is a challenge, as each type requires specific care. However, it’s this variety that makes the work special and enjoyable.

After a meticulous quality control, the Amaryllises are sorted by buds, length, and weight. Martijn and his enthusiastic team ensure that the flowers are packed with precision to meet customer requirements, whether in boxes, sleeves, or in water.
Sustainability at Van der Ende Flowers
Sustainability is highly valued at Van der Ende Flowers. They were among the first Amaryllis growers to use a heat pump and have about 1,000 solar panels on the nursery. The company also utilizes geothermal energy, which nearly eliminates the need for gas. They also apply biological pest control, aligning fully with their vision for sustainability and the future.
